Clarification: This is the most common cognitive misconception in GABA raw material procurement and industry promotion. The quality of GABA raw materials cannot be judged by the single indicator of purity, and higher purity does not equate to better quality.
The quality of raw materials must be evaluated comprehensively from multiple perspectives. Promoting only purity without disclosing details of impurities and other key information makes it impossible to judge whether a product is safe and compliant, let alone its actual quality.
For example: a GABA raw material labeled with a purity of 99% means the remaining 1% consists of impurities. These impurities may include harmless by-products and inorganic salts generated during production, or potentially harmful residual organic solvents, heavy metals, unreacted starting materials, etc. The specific components and contents of these impurities vary with different production processes.
When procuring raw materials, enterprises should focus on the product's Certificate of Analysis (COA) and other quality certification documents, as well as its stability test data. They shall review key safety indicators including the content of main components, specific types of impurities, limits of individual impurities and total impurity limits.
For ordinary consumers purchasing GABA-containing products, do not be misled by the gimmick of "99% high purity". Instead, pay attention to whether the product's ingredient list and execution standard number are complete and compliant.
Misconception 2: For GABA, "higher addition level = better effect", with no need to consider other ingredients. (×)
Clarification: The addition level of raw materials is not equivalent to the actual effective dosage. The efficacy of GABA products should be evaluated comprehensively in light of its mechanism of action, safety and complementarity with other ingredients.
There is a strict safety range for GABA intake. Excessive intake may excessively inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, leading to drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, blood pressure fluctuations and other adverse symptoms. Both product development in the industry and daily intake by consumers must set scientifically compliant addition levels and recommended daily intake based on product positioning (such as sleep aid, emotional regulation, exercise management) and target groups, in strict accordance with the relevant regulatory requirements for novel food raw materials in China, so as to avoid risks caused by the blind pursuit of high content.
Compound formulation strategies achieve a more comprehensive, mild and effective neuromodulatory effect through multi-pathway synergistic intervention, which is far superior to the simple accumulation of a single ingredient. For example, relevant studies have verified that products formulated with jujube seed extract, L-theanine and GABA can effectively shorten the sleep latency and prolong the sleep duration of mice. In another case, the compound of whey protein and GABA can achieve a "1+1>2" effect in improving the lean body mass of people engaged in exercise. The core of a high-quality GABA formula lies in maximizing the absorption, penetration and receptor binding efficiency of GABA through scientific compounding, so as to achieve low dosage, high efficacy and high safety, rather than blindly increasing the GABA content.
Misconception 3: For GABA, "no additives = absolutely safe", and it can be used with confidence by special populations (pregnant women). (×)
Clarification: The term "no additives" only means no artificial colors, artificial flavors or preservatives are added, but GABA itself is not suitable for all populations, and special populations are strictly prohibited from using it.
Pregnant and Lactating Women:GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that may pass to the fetus or infant via the placenta or breast milk, potentially interfering with their nervous system development. Studies using in vitro cultured mouse embryos have shown that GABA at concentrations of 10–50 μg/μL inhibits preimplantation embryonic development. This serves as a warning that intake of GABA supplements must be strictly restricted before conception and during pregnancy[2].
Individuals Taking Sedative or Anti-Anxiety Medications:Concomitant use of GABA with drugs such as diazepam and lorazepam can enhance central nervous system inhibition, and may even lead to respiratory distress.
Patients with Hypotension, Hypoglycemia, or Those Taking Antihypertensive Drugs:GABA exerts vasodilatory effects and inhibits sympathetic nerve activity, which can lower blood pressure and reduce hepatic glycogenolysis. These actions may worsen symptoms of hypotension or hypoglycemia. When used in combination with antihypertensive drugs (e.g., nifedipine), GABA may cause excessively low blood pressure.
It is recommended that relevant manufacturers clearly label contraindicated populations on product packaging (e.g., “Contraindicated in pregnant women, lactating women, and individuals taking sedative medications”). Special populations should only use GABA-related products after consulting a doctor.
